The Art Wheeler Band
with Kane West Organ Trio
FRIDAYS AFTER FIVE - BUD LIGHT CONCERT SERIES
C'ville Jazz Royalty - Free Show
Local Jazz Illuminati Art Wheeler, John D’earth, Robert Jospe, Brian Mesko and Charles Owens will combine forces to deliver gospel, rhythm & blues, soul, jazz and funk accompanied by noted vocalist Barbara Edwards, first lady of the Mt Zion First African Baptist Church on May 16th at the Intelos Pavilion, downtown Charlottesville.
Four members of this band are in one to seven other bands and two are faculty members in the Jazz Department at UVa. Collectively, they’ve performed with several music nobilities such as Miles Davis, Mike Brecker, Dave Matthews, and Les McCann, and played a musical role in the Oscar-winning Jessica Lange movie ‘Blue Sky.’
As one special feature, the group will present a unique medley of the greatest keyboard hooks such as “Gimme Some Lovin”, “Green Onions”, and “What a Fool Believes.” Barbara Edwards will perform powerful Motown hits “Dancin’ in the Streets” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” as well as beloved gospel ballads “O Happy Day” and “I Was Born By the River.”
Barbara Edwards will thrill those who have never heard her genuine raw emotion while the spirited Wheeler jams with D’earth, Mesko, Jospe, and Owens in this unprecedented concert which promises to be most exciting. Maybe have you dancin’ in the streets.
